Following the recent extension of Namo Bharat to Meerut South, NCRTC has now unveiled the Meerut Metro trainset. Our team had the opportunity to attend the unveiling event, where we explored how this new addition will transform local travel in Meerut. While many of the features and the cabin design of the Meerut Metro trainset are similar to those of the Namo Bharat train, there are still notable differences between the two. Here’s a closer look at the exterior, interior, features, and facilities provided by NCRTC to enhance the passenger experience on the Meerut Metro.
Exterior Design
The silhouette of Meerut Metro trainset closely resembles with Namo Bharat (Rapid Rail). The colour theme of the Meerut Metro features a vibrant combination of fluorescent green, blue, and orange, creating a modern and dynamic visual identity.
Top Speed
The Meerut Metro, indigenously developed by Alstom is designed to reach a top speed of 135 km/h, with an operational speed of 120 km/h. That said, the Meerut Metro will be the fastest operating metro in the country.
Seating Options
The metro has a capacity to carry up to 700 passengers in a single 3-coach train, with over 173 cushioned seats available.
It features a combination of 2×2 transverse and longitudinal seating arrangements, providing both comfort and efficient use of space for passengers.
Amenities in Coach
All the coaches in the Meerut Metro are air conditioned with luggage racks, grab handles, CCTV cameras, 2-USB mobile charging ports for each row, and dynamic route maps.
Safety Features
To improve crowd management, NCRTC has installed Platform Screen Doors (PSDs), while the push-button operated train doors not only enhance passenger safety but also contribute to energy efficiency. Other features include passenger emergency communication system, fire extinguishers, alarms, and talk-back systems.
Emergency Features
The train is also equipped with dedicated spaces for medical stretchers and wheelchairs, ensuring accessibility during emergencies. Additionally, the metro stations feature spacious lifts designed to accommodate both medical stretchers and wheelchairs.
Meerut Metro Stations
The Meerut Metro will cover a total distance of 23 km with 13 stations, including 18 km of elevated tracks and 5 km of underground sections. Nine stations are elevated, three are underground, and one is at ground level. The metro will cover the entire 23 km in just 30 minutes.
The stations include: Meerut South, Partapur, Rithani, Shatabdi Nagar, Brahampuri, Meerut Central, Bhaisali, Begumpul, MES Colony, Daurli, Meerut North, Modipuram, and Modipuram Depot.
The entire RRTS corridor along with Meerut Metro is expected to be operational by 2025.
