The Indian government introduced GST 2.0 last month, which has led to massive turmoil in the Indian automobile market. Car sales have soared, Tata Motors jumped the sales chart to second position; and Volkswagen/Skoda still struggles to make its place in the Indian car market despite launching 3 brand-new cars, including the Skoda Kylaq, Volkswagen Tiguan R, and the Golf GT, but is still locked in at a soaring stage despite such a top-of-the-line lineup. Another notable change last month was the introduction of the festive discounts. During the auspicious Navaratri week, it didn’t manage to make a dent in sales. So, without wasting much time, let’s dig into the car sales report of September 2025, listing all the top-to-bottom players.
Maruti Suzuki
- Topping the charts is Maruti Suzuki, whose domestic sales for September stood at 132,820 units compared to last year’s sales in the same month, which stood at 144,962 units. Although sales did decline, this Indian carmaker still managed to take the no. 1 spot very comfortably. The brand also saw a steep decline in the demand for its entry-level hatchback segment.
- The brand’s overall utility vehicle sales also soared, standing at just 48,695 units, down from last year’s 61,549 units. However, it did see a rise in the sales of its compact hatchbacks and sedans, which grew from 60,480 units to 66,882 units last month.
- Tata Motors takes the number 2 spot on the list, as the homegrown carmaker reported sales of 59,667 units in the domestic market in the month of September. 2025. which also marks a 47% Y-O-Y growth for the brand. Tata Motors’ cumulative PV sales stood at 60,907 units, with its EV segment accounting for 9,191 units, which also marks a new high for Tata Motors.
- On an individual level, the Tata Nexon became the top-selling vehicle for the brand in the month of September 2025, with over 22,500 units sold during this month.
Mahindra
- Mahindra takes the third spot, surpassing last year’s contender, Hyundai India, which has slipped down to the fourth spot. Mahindra’s domestic sales amount to 56,233 units, which marks amere 14% Y-O-Y growth. Its cumulative PV sales stood at 58,714 units.
- Although the brand did report an upturn during the Navaratri period, with an almost 60% growth in its customer retail during the same time last year.
Hyundai India
- Sliding down the ladder is Hyundai India, which took the 4th spot behind the Indian carmakers with its domestic sales of only 51,547 units; despite adding the electric version of the brand’s best-selling car, the Hyundai Creta, sales still simmered.
- As always, The Creta reported its best month ever of sales with almost 19,000 units sold, while the sales number of the Venue also showed a slight surge with a sales number of 11,484 units, which is also its highest in the last 20 months.
Toyota
- On the 5th spot is the Japanese carmaker. Toyota, with its domestic sales of 27,089 units in the month of September 2025. The brand’s exports stood at 4,002 units compared to its 3,045 units last year.
- Toyota’s overall sales in the past 6 months, from April to September 2025, stood at 1,84,959, up from 1,62,623 in the same period last year.
Kia
- Taking the 6th spot is another Korean giant and Hyundai’s sister brand Kia, which reported sales of 22,700 units in September 2025. This also amounts to an almost 16% Y-O-Y decrease compared to last year’s sales during the same year, which stood at 23,523 units.
Honda
- Honda Cars India reported a decline in sales as its cumulative sales amounted to 8,069 units in the month of September 2025, compared to its 10,911 units last year.
- The brand’s overall performance in the domestic market was flatlined at 5,303 units compared to 5,675 units last year via exports. Despite such low numbers, Honda did express a positive outlook for the coming months, keeping its faith intact for the upcoming festive season and the GST 2.0 initiative.
Skoda
- Despite rolling down to the 8th spot, Skoda did report a strong comeback, with credits being given to its latest launch, the Skoda Kylaq. Skoda reported a strong 101% Y-O-Y growth with 6,636 units sold in the month of September 2025.
- According to Skoda, it has sold almost 53,355 units so far in 2025, out of which 34,500 units accounted for the Skoda Kylaq.
Nissan
- Japanese carmaker Nissan reported cumulative sales of 10,500 units in the month of September, amounting to a 9.3% growth compared to last year, while its sales in the domestic market stood at 1,652 units.
- Nissan did manage to export 8,872 of the 10,500 units to markets outside of India.
